Tripod Even if you can’t use a tripod in the immediate vicinity of a monument, it can come in handy at a distance for capturing long exposures, sharp cityscapes, panoramas, and image series for later compositing. It’s also useful when working with a tilt-shift lens to manage lens distortion or create a miniature effect.

Panoramic Tripod Head For shooting panoramas, use a panoramic tripod head to create a seamless panorama without parallax issues. Once attached to your tripod head, it keeps the point of view of your camera stable as you shift the image frame for a series of shots.

Software Image editors like Adobe Photoshop provide tools for removing people and objects from a scene. Look for cloning tools and content-aware object-removal tools. Meanwhile, a dedicated panorama-stitching program or image-merging tools in editors like Photoshop will allow you to stitch a series of side-by-side or top-to-bottom frames into a seamless horizontal or vertical panorama.

Scouting and Sun Position Apps These allow you to forecast the light angles at specific locations and view sight lines from different elevations on a map. Some even let you simulate the fields of view you’ll get with different lenses.
